Many artists get approached by managers and management companies to offer their services.

  • Are they honest with you? Do they look you in the eye and tell you that your performance was not up to scratch?
  • Are they in tune with your goals?
  • Does their dedication run further than your expectations?
  • Do they tell you that you are the greatest thing they have ever seen/heard?
  • Do they tell you that they can make you famous? You are going to be a star?

If you answered yes to the last two you are probably dealing with someone who is not totally on the level with you!

Success is bourne out of hard work from all parties, from the artist or band as a whole, the management team, all of the way through to the booking agent, merchandiser, publicist, sound engineer, tour manager, record label, label manager, sales team, distributor and even down to the promo mail out person in the post room.

The manager and its team ensures that all of this is being done by somebody. Early in the artists career the manager may assume some of these roles to assist the artist or band but should not be allowed to carry the burden alone, this is a team effort. Did anyone ever tell you why it is called the Music BUSINESS?

A manager should be appointed because you agree with their strategy to assist the Artist in achieving their goals and to agree with their method of working and dedication that they show. Once you appoint a management team you must agree to allow them to manage you. By being managed you find a better balance and working relationship.

If an artists does not allow for this, then chances are you could be in for a rocky (no pun intended!) partnership.
